It was the long and gradual sculpting of the landscape by rivers and streams flowing down from the Massif Central area that produced the contours of this well-exposed piedmont plain, where the Chemins de Bassac estate has its 15 hectares (37 acres) of vines.
The soils here are of limestone-clay originating from ancient Quaternary (Villafranchian stage) alluvial terraces. Stony and very well-drained, they benefit from a good supply of water, which enables them to withstand even the driest summers.
